Have a Taste of Canadian Food at Main Street Kapitolyo

Looking for comfort food around Manila is probably the easiest thing to do. There are so many restaurants that offer comfort food nowadays that choosing one becomes a task. But when it comes to authentic Canadian comfort food, there is only one place that comes to my mind and that is Main Street.

Found within reach of people from North and South of Metro Manila cause it's conveniently located in Kapitolyo, Main Street is a restaurant that offers Western comfort food, particularly Canadian cuisine, for Filipinos to try. It is owned by Chef Adam Tan who conceptualized this restaurant using all his knowledge from living in Canada.

I love how spacious this restaurant is. Aside from the main area where they usually cater guests, Main Street has separate function rooms which can accommodate up to 40 people each. The place they are in now was actually a house so the existing rooms were just smartly converted into function rooms. Even the garage was converted into an outdoor dining space which I really love because of the wall decor.

Cajun Spiced Prawn Salad - P280

I am not really familiar with Canadian cuisine but from what I have learned, it's almost the same with any other Western cuisine except that there are dishes that are particularly Canadian. To start our gastronomic journey to Canada, we were served with Cajun Spiced Prawn Salad. I always love salads with light yet flavorful dressing and this one tops my list. It has mixed greens, Cajun spiced grilled prawns, orange tarragon vinaigrette, orange segments, sliced tomatoes, parmesan cheese, and white wine Dijon mustard vinaigrette.

Supreme Poutine - P290

The highlight of Main Street's menu would definitely be their Poutines. If you haven't heard of Poutine, it is a Canadian dish of fries covered with gravy and cheese. They have traditional ones but their bestseller is the Supreme. Comprised with hand-cut fries, cumin spiced flank steak strips, cheese sauce, tomato salsa, spring onions, shredded lettuce, and cilantro crema, this dish is the perfect appetizer. If you love nachos, this one would surely become an instant favorite.

Bacon Poutine - P240

Everyone loved the Supreme but I am crazy about bacon so the Bacon Poutine instantly won my heart (and tummy). This one has hand cut fries, homemade Applewood smoked bacon bits, mozarella cheese curds, and dark beef gravy. I love how the fries remained crispy despite being soaked with gravy, same goes with the Supreme. And the flavorful bacon bits aren't bits at all. Serving was indeed generous. Be sure to visit them every Wednesday as they have a buy 1 take 1 deal for Poutines on that particular day.

Bacon Jam Grilled Cheese - P270

I've only started to like grilled cheese sandwich recently and Main Street's Bacon Jam Grilled Cheese was a surprise. It's definitely nothing like your ordinary grilled cheese sandwich. Rye bread is filled with homemade bacon jam, melted cheddar and mozzarella cheese. I think this is a dish that even children would love because it has a sweet taste to it. It is paired with roasted tomato soup which I absolutely love with the sandwich.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken - P290 (3 pcs.)

Who can say no to this dish? The Buttermilk Fried Chicken is brined for 8 hours and cooked southern style. It is served with garlic cream sauce and a choice of either dirty rice or fries. The breading was crunchy and flavorful and the chicken itself was really tender but not dry. I love how mild the sauce was and how yummy they were together. This dish was so good, I wish there were more servings per order. You can get this dish for a serving of two pieces (good for one person), three pieces (good for two persons), or a platter.

Tomato Braised Seafood Stew - P350

I felt like the Tomato Braised Seafood Stew was out of place when it first came out of the kitchen. But when I tried it, it was nothing short of comforting. The soup has a strong flavor but the rest of the ingredients have a mild taste so it turned out well. This hearty dish is made up of prawns, mussels, fish and vegetables braised in an aromatic tomato stew. It is served with either garlic bread or plain rice. I think I would have liked this better with rice though.

Barbecue Burger - P300

We were able to try out four burgers that night so imagine how full I was after the event. The first one was a Barbecue Burger filled with fried onion ring, cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and barbecue sauce, among others. All these are packed inside a sesame bun. I love how sweet and savory this dish is. The bias towards bacon made this dish an instant favorite.

Classic Cheeseburger - P260

If you prefer something classic and original, the Classic Cheeseburger would match your tastes well. It is filled with romaine lettuce, sliced tomatoes, grilled onions, cheddar cheese, ketchup, mustard, and pickles. The melted cheese with that seared beef patty is to die for! By the way, each burger comes with 150 grams freshly ground USDA beef patties that are seared to order. Each one is guaranteed fresh and mouthwatering!

Double Bacon Burger - P310

If you are into bacon (like me), the Double Bacon Burger would not disappoint you. Burst of flavors come from homemade bacon jam, applewood smoked bacon, sliced tomatoes, mozaralla cheese, and arugula. I love how they have come up with signature sauces such as their bacon jam that makes you remember the dish as something that came from Main Street. If you prefer more bacon on your burger (cause you can never have too many bacon strips!), an additional bacon would cost you only P50.

Caramelized and Bleu Burger - P290

Another unique offering at Main Street is their Caramelized and Bleu Burger which I personally love. It has arugula, bleu cheese, caramelized onions, and garlic mayonaise. I love how it has a unique sour taste to it because of the cheese. If you are wondering if the arugula has a strong flavor contrast to the rest of the ingredients, it has none and it goes perfectly with the rest of the items. Burgers do not come yet with fries but you can get them for only P65 per order of burger.

Barbecue Chicken Pizza - P300

Most of their dishes are reasonably priced and the servings are suitable for sharing but the dish that I found most affordable was their pizza. If you are looking for a unique flavor, their Barbecue Chicken Pizza is your perfect choice. Filled with generous toppings of barbecue jam, Cajun rubbed chicken, sliced red onions, chopped cilantro, and grated cheddar and mozzarella cheese, this surprisingly sweet dish was gone in an instant. I think this is one of the dishes that even kids would actually love.

Beef Shin Ragu - P360

When I thought I was already full from all the burgers and poutine, this big bowl of Beef Shin Ragu comes out of the kitchen. Beef shin is slow braised and put in a tomato sauce. This mixture is tossed in linguine pasta and topped with grated Parmesan cheese. I was surprised at how plentiful the servings was. The sauce was mild in itself but with the beef and cheese with it, it becomes a whole lot flavorful.

Fudge Brownie A la Mode - P190

One dessert that I have been encountering a lot lately is the Fudge Brownie A la Mode. Main Street's version is something that adults would prefer. The brownie wasn't sweet at all, but it goes perfectly with the vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce that goes with it.

Blueberry Cheesecake - P190

Everyone's favorite would have to be this Blueberry Cheesecake. I love homemade blueberry cheesecakes cause you know that what goes in it are nothing but authentic ingredients. Theirs was a classic New York style cheesecake served with blueberry compote. What I love about this dish is that it you can actually taste the cream cheese in it. Some cheesecakes don't even have a sour taste to it, but this one is all genuine. It wasn't too sweet so everyone enjoyed it. This one's good for sharing but it's so good I doubt if you would want to share it.

Apple Crumble - P200

The last dish that took us to Canada that night was the Apple Crumble. Sliced apples are roasted in butter, honey, and cinnamon. It is baked with a crumble crust and topped with graham crackers and vanilla ice cream. The apple crumble itself wasn't too sweet so it's perfect to eat it with the vanilla ice cream. If you want a unique dessert, you should definitely try this one.
