Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest Year 4 - Grand Finals

Yesterday, I was able to witness the grand finals of the 4th Gyudon Eating Contest of Yoshinoya Philippines at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City. If Coney Island in New York, USA has the world-famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, then the Philippines definitely has Yoshinoya.

During the qualifying rounds, several customers dared to consume the most number of gyudon in 5 minutes. 46 participants who won in the qualifying rounds moved on to the grand finals. During the final round held yesterday, these contestants competed by eating the most number of bowls in 15 minutes.

Before the event proper started, Yoshinoya prepared some games and activities where the audience were able to participate. The winners were able to win prizes from some of the event partners, Mogu Mogu and Cebu Pacific.

This year’s prizes got even better—and bigger—especially for the First Place winner, who received P150,000 in cash and a round trip ticket to Japan courtesy of Cebu Pacific, which flies two flights daily to Japan via Narita and via Nagoya every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The 2nd placer won P50,000 while the 3rd placer took home P25,000. Non-winners were each given consolation prizes of P2,000 worth of Yoshinoya gift certificates.

A separate set of Four (4) contestants from the media—Print, Radio, TV, Online, who all competed in separate “media-only” qualifying events—also competed during the grand finals as they try to finish as many Yoshinoya Gyudon Beef Bowls as they can under the same rules.

And the contest starts now!!!

It was unbelievable how the contestants finished all those bowls of beef gyudon! All of the contestants went through a medical examination minutes before the competition as this kind of competition is not an easy one. It is definitely physically demanding and sometimes even dangerous. But they were all fast, competitive, and eager to win.

Singaporean Zermatt Liang Zhaoyuan ate 8 bowls of beef gyudon in 15 minutes!

At the end of the 15 minute deadline, Number 24, Zermatt Liang Zhaoyuan, won the competition and was declared as the winner of the Yoshinoya Gyudon Eating Contest. He's now P150,000 richer and got himself a trip to Japan via Cebu Pacific.

See you all next year! I am definitely joining hahahaha!
