Chucky and Tiffany for Halloween

Last Halloween, Zack and I dressed up as Chucky and Tiffany. I am not sure if many people got the idea, but I don't think the Chucky movie series was even popular here in the Philippines. I guess I'll let Zack pick his own costume for the following Halloweens. Honestly, I had a hard time looking for a costume for Zack. I thought it would be easy since it's just a striped shirt and overalls. Apparently, there are no more shops that carries overalls for toddlers. I tried four malls and they do not have it. There's one in Old Navy at Fairview Terraces but the largest that they got was for 24 months old kids. I found a jumper at Divisoria, but it was a bit small so I had to alter it.
On Zack: H&M shirt, Jumper from 168, adidas shoes
On me: Romwe biker jacket, Efoxcity dress

Looking for the shirt though was really easy. I got it from H&M at SM Fairview. I was surprised how affordable clothes are at H&M as compared to other brands for kids. Some clothes from other brands are ridiculously priced and have ugly designs. This shirt costs only 399php and it has the finest and softest fabric! Zack has another one in a different color which was given to him during his last birthday party. I love putting this shirt on him because he looks extremely adorable in it. Hope you like this one!

Have You Bet on the Right Diaper?

Pampers, the world’s leading diaper brand, recently launched the New Pampers Baby Dry: 99.9% Dryness Challenge. During the said challenge held last week at Robinson's Manila, mommies were given a chance to challenge their current diaper and win their baby’s first prizes such as their first play set, first high chair or first stroller. As for me, I did not have a hard time betting on the right diaper! I knew right from the start that Pampers Baby Dry can guarantee 99.9% skin dryness as I've been using it on Zack since its launch last March and we have practically tried all sorts of diapers in the past.

Taking on the challenge was really simple. First of all, mommies age 18 years old and above, residing in the Philippines, and have babies 0-3 years old should register online and bring their current non-Pampers diaper to the event. All that they have to do during the event is to pick the right diaper, undergo the simple test, and see for yourself which diaper provides 99.9% dryness!

Pampers Baby Dry and Brand X are being tested and sampled for the challenge!
Same amount of liquid are simultaneously being poured over both brands.
Pampers Baby Dry have completely absorbed the liquid while there's still a significant amount of liquid over Brand X.
5 lbs. weights were then placed over the diapers.
As I have previously said, see it for yourself! The paper napkin over the Pampers Baby Dry is completely dry while the one over Brand X is significantly soaked!
For mommies who bet on the right diaper, you may claim your awesome prizes from the Love Corner.

I am definitely proud to say that I am one of the mommies who bet on Pampers Baby Dry for this challenge. I've been impressed with its performance ever since. It definitely guarantees dryness especially during the night. It has a slim fit and stretchy tapes that provides comfort. It doesn't become bulky even after a few wettings unlike other brands. And its magic gel can absorb up to 7 wettings!

Mommies from Visayas and Mindanao can also get a chance to challenge their current diaper and win their baby’s first prizes when they register in Ayala Center, Cebu City on December 6, 2015, and Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro City on December 15 2015. Guarantee your slot by pre-registering. Visit the Pampers Philippines Facebook page for more details (www.facebook.com/PampersPh).

5 Myths and Facts about Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious condition with severe effects that can last a lifetime. However, there are many misconceptions regarding diabetes that make people think certain foods or situations will immediately make them diabetics. Thus, it is essential to know the myths and facts about diabetes.

“Genetics and lifestyle are major causes of having diabetes. It should be taken seriously, but it’s important to remember that not everything you hear about diabetes is true. Learn the facts, so you can make knowledgeable decisions to prevent the disease,” says Dr. Nicky Montoya, president of MediCard Philippines.

Here’s a list of diabetes myths and corresponding facts:

Myth: Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar.

Fact: Weight gain is one of the risk factors in developing diabetes. A diet that is high in excess calories can be a cause of excess weight. Drinking sugary drinks such as sodas has been linked to excess weight, thus, increasing a person’s risk for developing diabetes. However it is not yet proven that too much sugar directly causes diabetes.

Myth: Women with diabetes should not get pregnant.

Fact: Women who manage their diabetes well can have a normal pregnancy and give birth to a healthy baby. But a woman with diabetes should keep her blood glucose (sugar) in the target range—both before she is pregnant and during pregnancy.

Myth: People with diabetes cannot donate blood.

Fact: Diabetics are eligible to donate blood as long as their sugar level is controlled, are in good health, their blood pressure is below 180/100 and are not anemic. On the day of the blood donation, they need to remember to eat an adequate meal, drink extra fluids, and avoid drinking caffeinated beverages. It is also advisable for diabetics to stay away from fatty foods, as it might affect some of the tests done to determine their eligibility for blood donation.

Myth: Diabetics should never consume alcoholic drinks.

Fact: Diabetics are advised to avoid drinking alcohol since it may lead to a major drop in blood sugar. However, according to some studies, one drink of alcohol is allowed once a week depending on one’s health conditions. It is recommended for a diabetic to monitor his blood sugar before, during, and after drinking alcohol.

Myth: Diabetics should not eat rice.

Fact: All foods containing carbohydrates may affect diabetes. The key to maintaining good blood sugar level and preventing long-term complications is getting the right amount of carbohydrates in one’s diet. Also, the quantity and quality of the rice a diabetic can consume always depends on the nature and degree of the diabetes.

Diabetes should be taken seriously and managed properly. MediCard has 12 free-standing clinics nationwide that can give you more information about diabetes, as well as consultations, and laboratory tests. Four

This boy turned 4 a few days ago. It all still seem surreal to me because it was as if I gave birth to him yesterday. He used to be so tiny and fragile! Now, he weighs almost half my weight so it's hard for me to carry him nowadays. He has progressed a lot during the past year since he has now started school. He's doing well in school and he's now knows how to play with other kids. I am really proud and happy for all the things that he was able to achieve during the past year. One year may seem to be a relatively short (and fast) period these days, but a lot can definitely happen during the same.

This kid watches #AlDub too!

This journey has made a massive impact on my life. I could say that I matured a lot, although there are still days when I need someone "more adult" than me. Nevertheless, I've learned so much. During all these years of having Zack with me, I think I was able to gain more than what I was able to offer him. I was able to realize the real meaning of motherhood, that is, it is not a competition and that it is a never ending earning process of making mistakes and correcting them. More importantly, I was able to open my eyes to genuine and unending love. With that, I learned how to love myself - not in a conceited way, but rather in a way that I was able to feel like I am a person worthy of respect and love. By being dependent upon me, he made me feel that I am such a worthy and deserving person. There are times though when I feel like I am more dependent on him for my happiness and that makes me feel like I am being selfish since I am sometimes not with him whenever he needs me. For all those things that he taught me and for being able to deserve all these, I am forever grateful.

Shirt - H&M, Shorts - c/o Robby Rabbit, Shoes - adidas

When I wished for good health for Zack during his birthday party, I truly meant that. He gets sick too often and I want him to become a stronger and fit kid. My other wish for Zack on his birthday is that I hope he continues to share and receive love to and from everyone. I wish that he'll continue to be the loving, extremely sweet, and happy kid that we all have come to love.

Happy birthday, kid! Mommy loves you! :)

Tallest SG50 baby spotted in Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo proudly welcomed its first giraffe calf in 28 years on 31 August this year. At a statuesque 1.9 metres, he is the tallest SG50 baby, and is a symbol of Singapore soaring to new heights in the years following its Jubilee celebration.

The calf is the first offspring of both mom Roni and dad Growie, which arrived in Singapore Zoo in 2005, from Israel and the Netherlands respectively. The unnamed calf has since grown 40cm, and now stands at 2.3 metres.

Singapore Zoo’s first giraffe calf in 28 years looks curiously around his exhibit. The male calf, born on 31 August this year, is the first for mom Roni, and dad Growie, which arrived in Singapore Zoo in 2005, from Israel and the Netherlands respectively.

During the calf’s first month, he was separated from the rest of the giraffe herd to allow mother and baby to bond, and to ensure the calf was nursing properly. The exhibit was also baby-proofed as a safety precaution before allowing the calf to explore its new surroundings. Existing barriers had to be modified to ensure the baby can explore the exhibit safely.

Gradually, mother and baby were reintroduced to the other two giraffes in the herd—Growie, the father, and Lucy, an unrelated female, which arrived in Singapore together with Roni. The conditioning process took close to three weeks, to ensure the herd would accept the calf. All four are now comfortably sharing the exhibit and can regularly be seen grooming each other to strengthen their bonds.

Aside from the mother’s milk, the calf can now be seen nibbling on leaves and chopped vegetables such as carrots. He now spends his days exploring and running around in the exhibit at the Zoo’s Wild Africa zone. While he’s starting to get used to passing trams and visitors, he will still race back to the safety of mom’s towering presence when faced with something unfamiliar.

Roni the giraffe bonds with her new male calf, born on 31 August this year. The baby, the first in 28 years, is the tallest SG50 Jubilee baby and can now be seen with the rest of the giraffe herd in Singapore Zoo’s Wild Africa zone.

“Animal babies are always a cause for celebration as they are a good indication that the animals under our care feel comfortable and secure enough to breed in the environment that we’ve created for them. We hope the calf will tug at visitors’ heartstrings and inspire them to find out more about giraffes, and other animals that thrive in the same environment as these majestic creatures,” said Dr Cheng Wen-Haur, Chief Life Sciences Officer, Wildlife Reserves Singapore.

Although listed as least concern on the IUCN* Red List of Threatened Species, habitat destruction and fragmentation are threats to giraffe populations. To a lesser degree, they are hunted for their meat, coat and tails. The tail is prized for good luck bracelets, fly whisks and string for sewing beads, while the coat is used for shield coverings.

There are plans to conduct a naming contest to find a suitable name for the little one in coming months.

Those visiting Singapore Zoo are encouraged to take photos of the new addition and upload them with the hashtag #sg50babygiraffe. Visitors can follow updates on the baby giraffe’s development at www.zoo.com.sg/sg50babygiraffe

The Origins of Chocolates

Chocolates are truly a delightful indulgence enjoyed by many around the world.  Everyone has their favorite chocolate confection, but many do not know the history of this luscious, sweet temptation.

This well-loved treat actually dates back three or even four millennia ago in a Pre-Columbian Mexico setting.  And according to Pace University, it all started with a fermented drink by the Mayans and Aztecs called Xocoatl from the beans of the cocoa tree.

The Aztecs found it to be an invigorating drink and aphrodisiac. Some even believed that every cacao bean comes with mystical and spiritual qualities, and these qualities made the drink reserved for rulers, warriors and nobles.

In the 1500s, the chocolate’s symbolism of wealth and power continued in Europe, when the Spanish conquistadors returned home with cacao instead of gold and silver. Soon it became a royal favorite in Europe and was still served as a beverage, only combined with sugar to counter its bitterness.

Three centuries after, the first chocolate mold was introduced in England, but did not instantly become popular because of its bitter taste. It wasn’t until a renowned Swiss chocolatier named Daniel Peter, experimented with various flavors and ingredients was the strong taste of cacao balanced. After several tries, a chocolate with a rich texture and sweet taste was finally achieved by combining cacao with one of their most abundant products at that time—milk.

This marked the creation of chocolates as we know today. Its popularity has spurred a rising number of chocolate artisans from various parts of the world to incorporate their own traditions and secret recipes in creating their signature takes on chocolates.

One chocolatier from a small, idyllic town nestled in the heart of Padova, Italy called Villa del Conte stood out because of his exceptional recipe—Nazzareno Cattapan. Eventually, his exceptional recipe was bestowed to following generations, and preserving this legacy today is the third-generation chocolate connoisseur, Enrico Nazzareno. Using only handpicked cacao beans, shaped by a unique process, one can easily notice and taste the masterpiece of authentic Italian tradition.

From Italy, these artisanal chocolates reached the beautiful archipelago of the Philippines; and today, you can blissfully indulge in their luscious creations, including Praline Balls, Praline Sticks, Ovicinis, Domes, Truffles, and Neapolitans.

Visit Villa Del Conte stores at Shangri-La Plaza Mall, SM Megamall, Greenbelt 5, Alabang Town Center, Robinsons Magnolia, or Resorts World Manila. For bulk orders of Villa del Conte chocolates, please contact 893-2575 or 621-6101.

Prom Fashion on a Budget

So there is this one designer dress that you have always wanted to wear for prom ever since. The downside is that there are numerous factors that would affect your decision making when it comes to finally getting it. And I believe that one of such factor is your budget. It is quite disappointing when the only thing that is keeping you away from your dream dress is your limited budget. While you may have your eyes set in a particular dress, the good thing is that there are now unlimited choices online that would probably resemble your dream dress.

For just £50 and below at Promtimes.co.uk, you could finally get an awesome prom dress that would surely make everyone turn their heads. But cheap does not mean that its style and quality are compromised, the prom dress would still provide you with excellent quality and up to date design that designer dresses boasts of and possess.

Looking for appliqués? This blue dress has that designer dress look with a sheer neckline, a sexy cutout in the back, and a beautiful blue appliqué all over. It definitely has a diva and a red carpet feel to it. The green dress with a sleek design, on the other hand, provides you with delicate appliqué design which is almost lace-like. If you are going for a more sweet and romantic look, this dress is definitely for you!

Limited budget does not always mean inferior choices. I do not even think it is practical to spend much on a designer dress even if you have the budget for it and regardless if it is you or someone else would be paying for the dress. Working on a limited budget is definitely possible as you could get almost the same thing at a lesser price. For more choices and details about Promtimes.co.uk’s dresses for £50 and below, visit this page: http://www.promtimes.co.uk/in-stock-prom-dresses/prom-dresses-under-50.html.

Everyday

This set of photos has been on my drafts for a long time now. Honestly, I haven't had any time to make a personal blog post. I find myself too busy with school or attending to Zack's needs. I only have two classes this semester but it sure feels like a full load. I guess it's because of the pressure I put on myself to get high grades this semester. But I think it doesn't do me any good. I perform better in school when I am relaxed yet adequately prepared.

Anyway, I haven't been able to take outfit shots with Zack recently. I've been staying in our QC house for most of the week. Zack also got his school uniform recently so he rarely uses civilian clothing when going to school. He only gets to wear civilian clothes during Fridays, but we make him comfortable clothing such as jogging pants and shirt a la PE uniform.

This is actually what we usually look like every single day. For Zack, he usually dons a colorful ensemble. He sometimes chooses his clothes because sometimes he'd rather have shorts than pants or a shirt in different color. He usually chooses his shoes as well. He has two pairs Adidas sneakers, which are still slightly large for him, that he loves. As for me, I usually wear an all black look to school. I am not yet comfortable in donning a legit corporate attire so I stick with basic colors and designs. I usually wear dresses to school so I won't have to mix and match clothes anymore.

I'll try to come up with more "Mish and Zack" outfit posts in the future. I find it hard to come up with such because we only have one OOTD spot in the house and we rarely go out anymore. But in the meantime, please enjoy my product reviews and blog events posts! Hope you like this one!

GMG Construction launches new project in Norzagaray, Bulacan

Socialized housing is a concept not new to me since this was the topic that I chose for my undergraduate thesis, particularly the condition of low cost socialized housing projects in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. From what I have gathered and researched, settlers tend to leave their place of relocation because their jobs aren't there and the shelter granted to them was poorly made. I am extremely glad that one construction company, GMG Construction & Land Development Corporation, has finally decided to address these usual problems when it comes to socialized housing projects by coming up with a new low cost socialize housing project in Norzagaray, Bulacan.

During an event last week at Quezon City, I was one of the first to know about this promising project. The low cost socialized housing project is envisioned by GMG Construction through Socialized Housing Financing Corp of the Philippine government. It is a 12 hectare project that seeks to benefit families living in danger zones of Norzagaray and Manila. The project is currently being coordinated with the local government of Norzagaray, Bulacan.

The initial target number of housing units for Phase 1 and 2 is 2,640. Each lot area is at 26 sqm with structure ground area of 22 sqm and mezzanine/loft area of 11sqm. The project will allot 30% open space which can be used for school building, multi-purpose hall and recreation/amenities like basketball court and playground.

I am absolutely impressed with the proposed plan for the housing project. The design is far from any of the low cost socialized housing projects which I have previously visited. Moreover, the project aims to comply with land development standards such as proper water and power supply and drainage system and to provide community facilities such as covered basketball court/ multi-purpose center, day care center, and tricycle terminal. I am definitely looking forward for this project to finally materialize.

Taking Care of your Bones and Joints

Aging is inevitable and with it comes many health complications, such as bone and joint degeneration. Your bones provide support for the body and give you shape and posture, while your joints make the skeleton flexible. If bones and joints are not properly taken care of, they can become weak and even break which may need surgery to heal. That is why it is vital that you take care of them now.

Dr. Nicky Montoya, president of MediCard Philippines, encourages everyone to take care of their bones and joints while they are still young to prevent fractures and bone diseases.

“As you age, your bones and joints become brittle and weak. This may lead to bone diseases such as osteoporosis. People with osteoporosis most often break bones in the wrist, spine, and hip. These fractures can be very painful and make it difficult to do the things you usually do every day. If you don’t do the best you can now to make your bones strong, you might get this disease when you are older,” says Dr. Montoya.

Here are some tips for good bone and joint health:

Watch your weight. To ensure strong bones and joints, you need to maintain a healthy body weight. Extra body weight creates strain on your joints, particularly the knee joints. Research has shown that with every pound gained, you put four times more stress on the knees, while losing weight helps prevent joint injury and reduces pressure on the knees, hips, and back. Shedding as little as 10 pounds of body weight can help reduce pain and improve circulation.

Exercise. Less movement means more stiffness in your joints. People who remain glued to a chair all day have a higher risk for joint pain. Weight-bearing exercises can help keep your bones healthy. High-impact activities such as dancing, jogging, and running are advisable but if you’re predisposed to weak bones, walking may be a better exercise for you.

Know your limits. Exercising is good for your body, but you have to make sure that you are not pushing yourself too hard. Certain exercise and activities might be too tough for your joints to handle at first and workouts that have you bend forward may increase the risk of compressing a bone in your spine. Ask a trainer, physical therapist, or coach to help you modify exercises that cause joint pain. Listen to your body and go slow.

Stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water is one of the best ways to maintain joint health because proper hydration helps lubricate the joints. The joints’ synovial fluid, the liquid that allows the bones to glide over each other without friction, decreases as you age, and dehydration can cause the fluid to plummet rapidly thus causing bones to rub against each other.

Eat right. Healthy bones and joints stem from a diet that is rich in a range of minerals, proteins, and fats. The biggest cause of joint deterioration is the build up of free radicals, causing joints to swell and become painful. To prevent its effects, it is advisable to eat foods that are rich in antioxidants such as oranges, oil-rich nuts, and sardines. Aside from drinking milk and getting Vitamin D to ensure you have enough calcium for strong and healthy bones, bright-colored fruit and vegetables such as bananas, broccoli and peas are also recommended to help build and preserve bone mass.

If you have concerns about your bone and joint health, it’s best to talk to a doctor as soon as possible. MediCard has 12 free-standing clinics located in key cities nationwide that offer consultations, diagnostic tests and specialty medical services for young and adult patients. Go to the nearest MediCard clinic near you or visit www.medicardphils.com for more information.

Spooktacular Halloween Party at ActiveFun Fairview Terraces

I've never brought Zack to any Halloween party in the past so we were really excited when we got invited by Active Fun Fairview Terraces and Mommy Bloggers Philippines to attend this year's Spooktacular Halloween Event. We love Active Fun and we have been visiting it regularly ever since it opened last year so it was the perfect place to take Zack for his first Halloween party.

ActiveFun is a tried and trusted brand that aims to promote a one-stop safe and kid-friendly recreational facility advocating exercise in a safe, fun environment and play as a venue to develop several skills of the children. It allows group play encouraging kids to develop social and interpersonal skills as they learn to interact with other kids.

For the first part of the event, we went on a Trick or Treat parade at the lower ground floor of Fairview Terraces. The kids were ecstatic as they were given candies and chocolates as treats. Zack wasn't feeling well so we had to carry him during the trick or treat. Nevertheless, I can see that he is happy as he receives more candies and upon seeing the mascots of ActiveFun.

Btw, Zack's wearing a DIY Chucky costume!

The next part of the event was the Costume Contest. There were 4 categories wherein kids and their families can join - the Spookiest Costume, Cutest Costume, Little Prince and Little Princess Costumes, and Spookiest Family. There were probably more than 50 kids who joined this fun event!
